All DocuWare Clients Running Windows Server 2012 R2 | DocTech

From October 10, 2023, Windows Server 2012 R2 is officially end of life. This means that the operating system will no longer receive any security updates or support from Microsoft. As a result of this, DocuWare are also excluding Windows Server 2012 R2 from compatibility with any current and future releases of their software.

Additionally, Windows 11 version 21H2 is also officially end of life from October 10, 2023. However, this will not result in this version of windows ceasing to work with current DocuWare Cloud environments. At DocTech, always recommend that our clients use a version of Windows currently supported and updated by Microsoft.

What Does This Mean To You?

If you are unsure if you are still using Server 2012 R2 anywhere within your organisation, speak to your IT team or IT provider.

If you have no current Windows Server 2012 R2 servers in use, this change will not impact you at all.

If you still have Windows Server 2012 R2 servers within your internal IT infrastructure, there will need to be a plan to move any DocuWare/DocTech software away from these servers as soon as possible.

For DocuWare Cloud systems, DocuWare is disabling encryption protocols and cipher suites from October 10, 2023. As Windows Server 2012 R2 cannot be made to reliably work with current encryption protocols, this also means that Server 2012 R2 servers will no longer be able to communicate with DocuWare Cloud from October 10, 2023.

Any DocuWare Cloud elements running on a Server 2012 R2 environment will cease to function on October 10 2023. It is vital this is addressed prior to October 10 to avoid encountering issues.

For DocuWare On-Premises systems, Server 2012 R2 is no longer supported for installations of DocuWare or DocuWare Desktop Apps. Current DocuWare On-Premises systems will continue to function on Server 2012 R2 however you should already be looking to schedule migrations away from Server 2012 R2 for security & compatibility reasons.

The Technical Detail

From October 10, 2023, Operating System Requirements:

Minimum Supported Server Operating System: Windows Server 2016 (Note end of life for Server 2016 is 12 January 2027)

Minimum Supported Windows Client Operating System: Windows 10 Build 1809 (LTS). End of life 09 January 2029. (Note that other windows 10/11 versions have varied end of life dates.)

From October 10, 2023, Cipher Suite Requirements:

  • TLS_AES_128_GCM_SHA256
  • TLS_AES_256_GCM_SHA384
  • TLS_ECDHE_ECDSA_WITH_AES_256_GCM_SHA384
  • TLS_ECDHE_ECDSA_WITH_AES_128_GCM_SHA256
  • TLS_ECDHE_RSA_WITH_AES_256_GCM_SHA384
  • TLS_ECDHE_RSA_WITH_AES_128_GCM_SHA256
